W is for Water #A2ZChallenge

“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” – H. Auden

Can you imagine that I have not had water yet? These days it is so hot, everyone at home is guzzling glasses of water but there’s not even a drop of it for me. If you were not given any water, I am sure that you would not have been able to sustain even for a day and here I have to stay without water each day. Mommy says no water before I am 6 months old. I am sure it is the doctor’s order.  Water water everywhere but not a single drop for me to drink.

Sometimes, I do feel like drinking water especially when I am bathing. However, Mommy is very intelligent. She lifts my head high and very carefully lets no water go into my mouth. Even when she places me in the bucket of water, she is careful about the water being less and coming only till my chest.

One day Miss A asked Mommy, why are babies not given any water to drink? She told her that babies less than 6 months should not have water as it interferes with the body’s capacity to absorb the healthy stuff (nutrients) present in mommy’s milk (breast milk) or formula. Water can make little baby’s feel that their tummy is full and restrict their desire to feed.

Mommy also told Miss A that a baby’s kidneys are not mature enough to filter the water. Thus, if a baby has too much water then it can develop a medical condition known as water intoxication. This can further lead to seizures and in some cases coma. ”Water intoxication” is a result of lots of water in the body which lands up diluting the sodium concentration, thereby creating havoc in the electrolyte balance and in turn leads to swelling of the tissues.

Phew! I never knew that water could be so toxic for me! Maybe because each day I’m growing up very rapidly. I require much more energy than these adults and I guess water cannot fulfil this requirement. I will just have to wait until I am 6 months old … till then I’ll keep watching everyone else drink water and for me … I will just enjoy splashing and playing around in the water!

This is so cute… “Water water everywhere but not a single drop for me to drink.” I was literally imagining an infant sitting in a bath tub with a hope that a few drops might go in the mouth and s(he) can taste water…

Yeah, water is not supposed to be given to babies. Grow up fast lil one and then have your fill of water, till then continue playing and splashing in water! ♥

This is so cute! Water, the consumption of which becomes so important later in life, is dangerous for a baby less than six months old. That’s something to ponder! Very adoringly presented this fact through the story of Miss A.

I was aware of exclusive breastfeeding for an infant till he became 6 months but I had no idea that the effects of water could be so dangerous. Thanks for sharing this informative post.

Fortunately babies get all the water they need from their mama’s! That’s why mama’s are thirsty all the time while breastfeeding!
