Did you know that 60% of our body is water, heart and brain contain 73%, lungs have 83%, the skin has 64%, kidneys and muscles have 79% and even the bones contain 31% water.
Knock, knock, hello! So how do you feel today! Just a quick checklist:
- Do you often complain of headaches without a reason
- Do you have a craving for something sweet when you are very tired
- Do you find it hard to focus
- Is your urine dark rather than clear
- Do you have dry skin
- You sleep well but you still seem to be lethargic throughout the day
Well, does this ring a bell? Did you put a tick against any of these? Is it you? If so you could be suffering from dehydration!
Water is important for our body and you can see why! If you do not get enough water you will not be able to function properly. If you are dehydrated then you can forget about being alert. Dehydration can lead you to look like a zombie, to getting spikes of fever or extreme levels of low blood pressure. And the biggest minus point is that dehydration actually and literally shrinks your brain thus reducing your reaction time.
Wondering how you can stay hydrated throughout the day before you get thirsty. Oh yeah, by the way, thirst is the last indicator of dehydration. Here are simple ways of how you can stay hydrated even if you don’t like plain tasteless water:
Flavour you water:
In case you are someone who runs away from water, then try flavouring your water. You can add some fruit, herbs, cucumber or lemons in water. The water gets an enhanced taste and not to miss, it also becomes rich in vitamins and minerals. You can use an infuser fruit water bottle. This is an interesting way to gulp down water.
Increase your daily serving of fruit. There are many fruits which are high in water. Eating the right fruit helps to cover up for the required 8 glasses of water needed every day. Apples, strawberries and watermelon have a high content of water. Try to swap your snack with fruit.
Try a salad:
Just like the fruit, vegetables like cucumber, broccoli and spinach are also high in water. Lettuce and spinach also help prevent urinary tract infections. Tossing a salad is a great way to get hydrated without fretting.
Include chia seeds in your diet:
If you are someone who does not guzzle down water then soak chia seeds in your glass of water. This superfood rich in antioxidants, nutrients and proteins comes with a property of being absorbent. It is believed that the seeds can soak water almost ten times their weight. Eating soaked seeds with juice or water help to extend the duration of hydration.
Make some amazing smoothies:
Some amazing smoothies can be made by mixing fruits and vegetable. This is also a great way to stay hydrated. Hydrating vegetables like cucumber and spinach along with ice or coconut water is a powerhouse not only for hydration but also for nutrition. And not too forget, it boosts energy as well.
Opt for tea:
Well, don’t look at me like that as though it is dehydrating. As per research by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, tea not only hydrates you but also comes with health benefits as it contains antioxidants. There are many flavours and a wide variety of tea. You just need to be sure for the perfect cup of tea that you love!
Are you one of those who loves their doughnut or a gulab jamun. Then you should know that eating carbohydrates with sugar are very quick to increase and decrease the energy and hydration levels. Our body has to work harder to digest the extra sugar. This creates an acidic environment thereby lowering the ability of the body to store water.
Do you often crave for sugar when dehydrated? This happens because often dehydration presents itself as hunger. On feeling hungry, the body looks out for the easiest way to get energy, thus sending out signals for cravings for high-calorie carbohydrate food. Next time, try to switch this craving for a fruit or a salad.
Are you well hydrated? I would love to know how you keep yourself hydrated throughout the day!
